Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 this October

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on Friday 23 October 2026. Activision has confirmed that the game will launch on the same day for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, giving Nintendo players access from the start rather than through a later release.

The launch marks Call of Duty’s return to a Nintendo console after an absence of more than a decade. Infinity Ward is leading development, while Digital Legends is working on the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Activision says the game is being developed natively for Nintendo’s latest hardware rather than adapted from a previous-generation edition.

Modern Warfare 4 Nintendo Switch 2 release date

Modern Warfare 4 will be released worldwide on 23 October 2026. Nintendo and Activision announced the Switch 2 edition in May, ending months of discussion about when Call of Duty would appear on the console.

The game will not be released for the original Nintendo Switch. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are also absent, with Activision concentrating on current-generation consoles and PC. This decision should give the development teams more room to create larger maps, improve visual detail and support busier combat areas without having to accommodate older hardware.

Digital pre-orders are already available for the PlayStation, Xbox and PC editions. Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders are due to open later in 2026, although Activision has not provided a date or confirmed whether every edition will be available through the Nintendo eShop.

Why Call of Duty on Nintendo Switch 2 matters

Nintendo consoles have missed several major Call of Duty releases, despite the series remaining one of the largest names in console gaming. The Switch 2 edition gives players another way to access the campaign, multiplayer and the returning DMZ mode without buying a PlayStation, Xbox or gaming PC.

Its arrival also expands the choice available to UK players deciding how to spend money on digital entertainment. As with comparing subscription services or a new online casino UK, it is sensible to check prices, age restrictions and payment terms before making a purchase. Modern Warfare 4 has an 18 certificate in the UK, so it is intended only for adult players.

The key question is how the Switch 2 version will perform beside the other editions. Activision has confirmed native development but has not yet published detailed information about frame rates, resolution, storage requirements or cross-platform play. These details will matter to players who want to use the console in handheld mode or compete online against users on more powerful systems.

Modern Warfare 4 campaign heads to Korea

The Modern Warfare 4 campaign begins with a North Korean invasion of South Korea. Players will follow Private Park, a young South Korean soldier whose patrol is caught in the opening stages of the conflict. The story also brings back Captain Price, who is operating outside official channels while pursuing a personal mission.

Activision has named Korea, New York, Paris and Mumbai among the campaign locations. Missions will include trench fighting, close-range urban combat, vehicle pursuits and SAS night operations. The different settings suggest that the campaign will move between conventional warfare and smaller covert missions.

The Korean Peninsula is a new main setting for the Modern Warfare series. Infinity Ward says it has worked to reflect the region’s culture, history and military details, although the campaign remains a fictional story built around a large international conflict.

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer maps and movement

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer will launch with 12 core maps. Dedicated Gunfight environments and larger Big War maps will also be included, giving players options beyond the standard team-based modes.

Infinity Ward has changed several parts of the movement and gunplay systems. Mantling, climbing, hanging and jumping have been expanded, while weapon handling has been rebuilt to respond more directly to player input. Bloom has been removed, which means hip-fire accuracy should correspond more closely with where the weapon is pointing.

One of the new multiplayer additions is Kill Block, a training facility that changes its layout between rounds. Activision says the modular arena can produce more than 500 configurations, altering routes, cover and sightlines during a match. It will support 3v3 and 10v10 formats at launch, with more modes planned after release.

Create-a-Class has also been redesigned to place operators, weapons, equipment and killstreaks within a single loadout system. Gunsmith returns with attachments shared across weapon classes, while a new Gunny feature can suggest builds for close, medium or long-range combat.

DMZ returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

DMZ will return as an extraction mode in Modern Warfare 4. Players can enter the conflict zone alone or as part of a squad, complete objectives, collect equipment and attempt to leave with anything they have secured.

Weather, military objectives and enemy movements can change during a deployment. These shifting conditions are intended to make runs less predictable and force squads to decide whether to continue collecting equipment or move towards extraction.

Activision has described DMZ as a central part of the new game rather than a minor additional mode. More information about its maps, progression system and links with Call of Duty: Warzone is expected before the October launch.

What remains unknown about the Switch 2 edition

Activision has yet to show extended gameplay captured directly from Nintendo Switch 2. Until it does, comparisons with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions will be based largely on specifications rather than real performance.

Storage is another concern. Recent Call of Duty games have required substantial downloads, and Switch 2 owners may need a microSD Express card if the installation is too large for their available internal storage. Activision has not confirmed the file size, whether the physical edition will include the complete game on its card, or which content will require an additional download.

Online requirements also need clarification. Multiplayer will be a major part of the package, but Nintendo and Activision have not fully detailed cross-play, voice chat or the Nintendo Switch Online membership requirements. Players should wait for confirmed platform information before choosing between editions.

A major October release for Nintendo Switch 2

Modern Warfare 4 is likely to be one of the most technically demanding games released for Nintendo Switch 2 during 2026. A simultaneous launch puts Nintendo’s console alongside PlayStation, Xbox and PC, while native development suggests that the Switch 2 edition is receiving more attention than a basic conversion.

Performance, storage and online functionality will determine how well the game suits the platform. Activision plans to release further Nintendo Switch 2 details before launch, including pre-order information. For now, the confirmed date is Friday 23 October 2026, when Call of Duty will return to Nintendo hardware after more than ten years.
